Defending the Right to Speak: Voltaire’s Wisdom in Medicine
Voltaire is one of my favorite French philosophers. He once wrote, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." Apparently, he was speaking to a religious priest or someone of that nature.
The political assassination of Charlie Kirk gutted me like it has for most of America. It stole a part of my soul and made me feel that the people behind this are soulless. In his relatively short life, Charlie energized a generation of conservative college students at a time of intense liberal orthodoxy and intolerance.
Charlie Kirk exemplified Voltaire in that his discussions were one of the only democratic, Socratic, non-violent ways of debating hard-to-discuss topics. You might’ve not agreed with what he said, but he always used open dialogue, debate, and respect to whomever he was speaking with.
This is what uniquely makes us American. Other countries have free speech as well, but it doesn’t rival what the core of what America stands for. Being American trul…
